Luing Cattle

Many may first know of the Isle of Luing through our famous Luing Cattle breed. First created by brothers Ralph, Denis and Shane in 1947, Luings were bred across two types of cattle. We used the Highland as the heifer and the Beef Shorthorn as the bull. The resulting Luing was the first new breed of cattle to be developed in Britain for over 100 years. The Highland was chosen as it contributes the hardiness seen in the breed today and the Shorthorn because of its fleshing qualities and flavour of meat. The breed was officially recognised by the British Government in 1966.

Sport

The Isle of Luing Shoot is a recently established pheasant and partridge shoot with additional wildfowling, duck flighting and snipe & woodcock shooting. Set across a unique 9000 acre multi-island estate, the shoot aims to combine a variety of different country sports such as rough and driven bird shooting, deer stalking and wildfowling with excellent catered and non-catered accommodation options. Add to this hilltop sun-downer drinks, wildlife boat trips to the Corryvreckan whirlpool, tours to Jura whisky distillery, mackerel and trout fishing and even water-sports - the Isle of Luing Shoot really is like no other. We have a range of options to suit all shooting parties, although our driven days are capped at 200 birds. Please don't hesitate to get in touch.
